FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS BY DOCTORS
Can I refer patients and still be HIPAA compliant?
Yes. We donít ever ask that you disclose protected health information to us. We simply ask that you pass our information on to qualified patients and let them decide if they want to participate in our program.
How much plasma do my patients donate?
The FDA is very strict about how much plasma can be collected. The amount depends on the patientís weight. A single donation may not exceed 880 ml.
How much compensation do my patients receive?
Patient compensation varies depending on the antibody collected. Generally, patients are compensated $150 to $300 per donation.
Is there a referral fee paid to the healthcare provider?
We do have the option available where providers can receive compensation for referring patients to our program. There is no violation of the anti kickback law as we are considered one of the safe harbors, i.e. referral agreement for specialty services, (see 64 FR 63518, Nov 19, 1999)
What kind of providers do you need?
We are looking for any provider who has direct contact with patients, such as: physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, etc.
How much involvement is expected from the healthcare provider?
Involvement should be kept to a minimum. A few seconds spent with the patient to give out our brochure or explain basic precepts of our program is all that is needed. Specifics about the donor program will be explained to the patient in detail when the patient calls us.
